ISDN (Integrated Services Digital Network) converts a standard analog copper wire telephone loop into a digital service with three logical channels: two 64k "B" or bearer channels for transmitting data and one 16K "D" or control channel. If the ISDN adapter or router supports bonding, the two 64k "B" channels can be bonded together to provide 128K access.

Benefits of ISDN

• If you have a lot of static or other noise on your analog phone line, your connection to the Internet will be slower and you may periodically lose your connection. ISDN usually offers a cleaner line and better connection.

• If you are not happy with the access speed of an analog modem, you will want to consider ISDN because it offers less latency (delay) in transmitting data, requires fewer retries to successfully transmit data, and provides 64k or 128K of bandwidth, which makes it faster.

• The fastest 56K modems are limited to a maximum of 33.6k when uploading to the the Internet and typical speeds of only 44k to 50k when downloading from the Internet. With ISDN, the subscriber can upload and download data at either 64k for one "B" channel, or 128K by bonding two "B" channels together.

• If you want to share a single connection among multiple individuals on your office network then DSL (where available), ISDN, a Frame Relay Data Circuit or a Point-to-Point Data Circuit will provide significantly better performance than analog dial-in options.

• ISDN can be a dial-in on demand service or a full time dedicated Centrex connection. ISDN currently offers the highest possible speed for a dial-in connection.

• A Centrex ISDN, DSL or 56K Frame Relay Circuit provides a low cost solution for 24 hour a day, seven day a week access for a low volume Internet Web or mail server.

Residential Dial-In ISDN
 

Residential ISDN service is available in most areas served by Bell Atlantic and GTE. If you do not live in a Bell Atlantic or GTE service area, you should contact your local telephone company to determine the price and availability of residential dial-in ISDN service in your area. Please call us to determine if dial-in ISDN access is available in your area.

Bell Atlantic offers packages which include a specific amount of time. Time is calculated in "B" channel hours and minutes. If you go over the amount of time purchased, you are charged for each "B" channel minute over the package limit. If you access the Internet for a wall clock hour at 64K, then you use one "B" channel hour or 60 "B" channel minutes. If you access the Internet for a wall clock hour at 128K, then you use 2 "B" channel hours or 120 "B" channel minutes.

A residential ISDN telephone line can also be used for voice and fax communications with special ISDN telephones or adapters which permit a standard analog phone or fax machine to use an ISDN line. With ISDN you can use one "B" channel to be on the Internet and the other "B" channel to be talking on your phone. Package usage is considered to be for outbound local voice and data calls. No package time is incurred for inbound calls (i.e., calls received on the ISDN line) or outbound toll or long distance calls.

Bell Atlantic Residential ISDN service is ordered directly from Bell Atlantic by the subscriber. All fees charged by Bell Atlantic are paid directly to Bell Atlantic and are in addition to the fees paid by the subscriber to Eagles Nest for ISDN Internet access.

You will need an ISDN adapter (for single user systems) or a router (for networks). You will also need to install and configure browser software on your system or network workstations. Adapters and installation services are usually sold by Eagles Nest resellers. Routers are usually included in Eagles Nest's Centrex ISDN Services.

The Monthly Basic Rate does not reflect the cost of local calling packages, optional features, or taxes or local fees.

Excess charges are per "B" channel minute. For example under Option 2 the first 140 "B" channel hours would be $33.60 plus the basic service fee. If the business used the ISDN service for 200 "B" channel hours then the fee for excess usage would be 3,600 "B" channel minutes at $.004 per minute or $14.40 plus taxes for the month.
