Setup Instructions for Netscape Communicator 4.04

PLEASE READS THESE INSTRUCTIONS CAREFULLY.

DO NO USE THESE FOR ANY OTHER INSTALLATION OTHER THAN THE EAGLES NEST CUSTOM NETSCAPE CD VERSION 4.07

Your email address will be your username@crosslink.net, NOT anything@eaglesnest.net

It is very important that you follow these instructions very closely or you will have trouble with the installation. Please read these through first, then begin your installation. Please make sure that you follow the "On Screen" instructions that are included in the CD setup. They must also be followed very closely. You will find some very important information on the CD that must be entered EXACTLY as shown. You must also remember that you cannot use UPPER CASE letters at any point in the setup of this software with the single exception of when you enter your "Real Name", which is your real name. The setup will ask you for this only one time. All other data has to be input in lower case letters or your software will not be configured properly and you will not be able to login to the Internet. PLEASE NOTE THAT YOUR USERNAME IS NOT YOUR REAL NAME AND IT IS NOT YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS. IT IS JUST YOUR USERNAME AS NOTED ABOVE, ALL IN LOWER CASE LETTERS. For your convenience, we have included a free copy of Eudora Lite on this CD for you to use with multiple email accounts.

  1. Exit all programs in running Windows, including any anti-virus software you may have running. To do this properly, hit Ctrl - Alt - Delete keys all at the same time, select each item seperately by clicking it one time, then click the END TASK button. Do this for each item in the End Task window until all the is left running are Explorer and Systray. Nothing else should be running. This is a very, very important step.
  2. Place the Communicator CD in your CD ROM drive.
  3. Double click "My Computer" on your desk top.
  4. Double click your CD ROM icon drive inside "My Computer"
  5. When the directory for the CD comes up, double click the Win95 folder, find and double click the "Setup.exe" Icon. The Install Wizard will start now.
  6. Click "Next" on the first Setup screen
  7. Click "Yes" to the Agreement
  8. Click "Next" on this screen. Allow Communicator to install into the default directory as shown on your screen
  9. If asked, click "Yes" to allow Setup to create a new directory for you
  10. Click "Next" to select the Default Program Folder
  11. Click 'Install" to begin the installation process. This may take some time, depending on the speed of your computer
  12. When installation is complete, click "No" to the readme file
  13. Click "Yes" on the "Setup is Complete" screen
  14. Click "OK" to restart your computer. YOU SHOULD RESTART IT NOW.
  15. After your computer has restarted, you will see two new folders open on your task bar at the bottom of your screen, "Netscape Communicator" and "Utilities" Click "Netscape Communicator" on your task bar to bring it up on your screen. Inside this window, find and double click "Netscape Account Setup"
  16. You may be asked to setup a "Profile". You should click "Grant" on the JAVA screen to continue. If you have a previous version of Netscape on your computer, your profile information will already be there. You just need to confirm it and continue setup. To setup your new profile, follow the instructions on the screens that follow. When asked to enter your email address, enter username@crosslink.net For example, if your username is becky you should enter becky@crosslink.net all in lower case letters.
  17. After you have completed the setup of your "Profile", you will come to the Eagles Nest - Netscape Communicator Setup screen. On this screen, click the "Netscape Account Setup" button
  18. Now click the "Start Account Setup" icon. Select your local POP site from the list and click "Next" Read the next screen and click 'Next"
  19. Fill in your name and organization information. Note, you can use upper and lower case letters on this screen only, so type your real name and your company name just as if you would normally. Example, David Dammer Eagles Nest, Ltd. DO NOT USE UPPER CASE LETTERS ANYWHERE ELSE IN THIS SETUP!
  20. Make sure your local dial up number is in the blank below. If not, select it from the list you see on the screen and click "Next" Make sure you enter the area code, Communicator will not do this for you. If you are not sure of your local dial up number, please call customer service at 804-453-6228
  21. On this screen enter your login/username and your password, all in lower case letters. YOU CANNOT USE UPPER CASE LETTERS FOR ANY REASON. After you have entered your login and password, click "Next"
  22. On this screen, make sure your Email login and password are the same as the login and password on the last screen. Click "Next"
  23. Your server information should already be in this screen. If not, enter the server information exactly as it appears on the right hand side of the screen, all with lower case letters. For instance, in the domain blank you should enter crosslink.net just as it appears on the screen. For your pop account information, be sure to put your login/username in front of the pop.crosslink.net THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT. So, if your login name is becky this blank should read becky.pop.crosslink.net Your DNS server numbers should already be in the blanks. If not, enter the DNS numbers and news server information, entering exactly what you see on the right hand side of your screen if they are not already in the blanks.
  24. Click "Next", skip over the "Publish" screen and click "Next" On this screen, make sure your modem is correctly selected and then click "Next" again
  25. If you have call waiting or need to dial a separate number for an outside line, follow the instructions on this screen. If not, just click "Next"
  26. You are almost done. On this screen click "Done" and then "OK" to restart your computer as per the directions.
  27. IMPORTANT Now, before getting on line, you should check some things. Double click "My Computer", then double click "Dial Up Networking". Inside the dial-up networking window you will see your new icon. Click your new icon with your right mouse button and then go to the word "Properties" when the box drops down. Click "Properties". A new widow will now appear. Make sure that there is not a black check to the left of "Use Country Code and Area Code". If there is, click it so that it goes away. Then click the "Server Type" button or tab. In that window make sure that only "Enable Software Compression" and "TCP/IP" have black checks next to them. If they don't click them so that they do. If anything else has a black check or black dot next to it, click it so that the mark goes away. Close all the "Dial-up Networking" and "My Computer" windows.
  • IMPORTANT One last thing to check will be to make sure your computer is setup to get online through Control Panel. Open Control Panel. Inside Control Panel open the Network Icon. Then scroll down until you find TCP/IP or TCP/IP - Dialup Adaptor. Select it by clicking it one time. Then go to the right side and click Properties. Inside Properties, select the DNS Configuration Tab. There you will need to make sure that ENABLE DNS is selected. In the blank to the right of HOST enter your login name only, all lower case letters (NOT YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS). Then inside the box to the right of DOMAIN enter crosslink.net (exactly as you see it to the left here, no CAPS, nothing other than what you see to the left). Then go into the DNS server Search Order box (the one with the dots in it and enter the following numbers 206 246 64 1 so that it reads exactly as follows: 206.246.64.1 Then Click ADD. Again, in the same box that you just got done entering into, enter the following numbers 207 199 128 1 and click ADD. You should now have two lines of numbers below and they should read as follows: 206.246.64.1 and 207.199.128.1 EXACTLY. Then select the IP Adress Tab, and make sure that Obtain an IP Address Automatically is selected. Then click the Bindings Tab. If you have Client for Microsoft Networks in this box, make sure you have a black check to the left of it. Once complete, click OK and OK until you don't have any more OK's to click. Then close all windows and restart Windows.
  • Now double click your dial-up icon on your desk top, fill in your password if aslked to and click "Connect" After you have received the message that you are connected, double click your "Netscape Communicator" icon. Communicator will now take you to your home page. You will see a row of small icons in the lower right hand corner of your Netscape Communicator screen Your email can be accessed by clicking the second one in from the left.
